Tangier: how Africa’s gateway city became a boomtown

Tanger Med is now the Mediterranean’s largest port. The city around it is growing faster than anywhere else in the kingdom.

Tangier: how Africa’s gateway city became a boomtown

Twenty years ago Tangier was a sleepy port town. Today Tanger Med handles more containers than any other Mediterranean port, and the free zones around it employ over 100,000 people in automotive and aerospace manufacturing.

The city’s population has grown past 1.2 million, and property prices in districts like Malabata and Cap Spartel have followed. Yet prices per m² remain roughly half of comparable coastal cities in southern Europe.

With the 2030 World Cup bringing a renovated stadium and new hotel capacity, and the high-speed rail link putting Casablanca two hours away, Tangier is the city our members ask about most.

On GrowMorocco you can compare Tangier asking prices against the city average per m² on every listing — and our local partner agencies can arrange viewings within days.
